NL Industries, Inc., incorporated in December 1891, is a holding company. The Company operates in the component products industry through its subsidiary, CompX International Inc. (CompX). Component Products
The Company, through Compx, manufactures engineered components that are sold to a range of industries, including recreational transportation (including boats), postal, office and institutional furniture, cabinetry, tool storage, healthcare, gas stations and vending equipment. As of December 31, 2016, Compx had three production facilities in the United States. The Company's Security Products business with a manufacturing facility in South Carolina and a facility in Illinois shared with the Marine Components business, manufactures mechanical and electrical cabinet locks and other locking mechanisms used in a range of applications, including ignition systems, mailboxes, file cabinets, desk drawers, tool storage cabinets, vending and gaming machines, high security medical cabinetry, electrical circuit panels, storage compartments and gas station security. CompX manufactures and sells cabinet locks and other locking mechanisms, including disc tumbler locks, which provide moderate security; pin tumbler locking mechanisms, which are used in applications requiring higher levels of security, including KeSet and System 64, TuBar and Turbine, and CompX eLock and Stealthlock electrical locks, which provide stand-alone or networked security and audit trail capability for drug storage and other valuables, through the use of a proximity card, magnetic stripe or keypad credentials. The Company's Security Products also include National Cabinet Lock, Chicago Lock, STOCK LOCKS, ACE, ACE II, Lockview, SlamCAM, RegulatoR and GEM.
CompX's Marine Components business, with a facility in Wisconsin and a facility shared with the Security Products business in Illinois, manufactures and distributes stainless steel exhaust components, gauges, throttle controls, trim tabs, hardware and accessories primarily for performance and ski/wakeboard boats. CompX's Marine Components business products include original equipment and aftermarket stainless steel exhaust headers, exhaust pipes, mufflers and other exhaust components; high-performance gauges, such as global positioning system (GPS) speedometers and tachometers; mechanical and electronic controls and throttles; steering wheels and other billet aluminum accessories, and dash panels, light emitting diode (LED) lighting, wire harnesses and other accessories. The Company's Marine Components include CompX Marine, Custom Marine, Livorsi Marine, Livorsi II Marine, CMI Industrial, Custom Marine Stainless Exhaust, The #1 Choice in Performance Boating, Mega Rim, Race Rim, Vantage View and GEN-X.
Chemicals
Kronos is a global producer and marketer of value-added titanium dioxide pigments (TiO2), a base industrial product used in imparting whiteness, brightness and opacity to a range of customer applications and end use markets, including coatings, plastics, paper, inks, food, cosmetics, and other industrial and consumer products. Kronos has production facilities in Europe and North America. Kronos, along with its distributors and agents, sells and provides technical services for its products. As of December 31, 2016, Kronos offered customers a portfolio of products that included over 40 different TiO2 pigment grades under the Kronos brand. Kronos' customers include domestic and international paint, plastics, decorative laminate and paper manufacturers. Kronos ships TiO2 to customers in either a powder or slurry form through rail, truck or ocean carrier.
As of December 31, 2016, Kronos owned and operated two ilmenite mines in Norway. Kronos manufactures and sells iron-based chemicals, which are co-products and processed co-products of the sulfate and chloride process TiO2 pigment production. Kronos manufactures and sells titanium oxychloride and titanyl sulfate. Kronos produces TiO2 in two crystalline forms: rutile and anatase.
