Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), incorporated in 1933, operates a public power system and supplies power in Tennessee, northern Alabama, northeastern Mississippi, and southwestern Kentucky and in portions of northern Georgia, western North Carolina, and southwestern Virginia. The Company manages the Tennessee River, its tributaries and certain shorelines to provide navigation, flood damage reduction and electricity, among others. TVA is a wholesaler of power. The Company sells power to local power company customers of TVA (LPCs), which then resell power to their customers at retail rates. TVA's LPCs consist of municipalities and other local government entities (municipalities), and customer-owned entities (cooperatives).
The Company operates power generating facilities, which include approximately 30 conventional hydroelectric sites, approximately one pumped-storage hydroelectric site, approximately nine coal-fired sites, over three nuclear sites, over 10 natural gas and/or oil-fired sites, approximately one diesel generator site, approximately 10 solar energy sites, digester gas cofiring capacity at over one coal-fired site, biomass cofiring potential (located at coal-fired sites), and over one wind energy site. TVA has approximately three nuclear sites consisting of over six units in operation and approximately one unit under construction. TVA's renewable energy portfolio includes both TVA-owned assets and renewable energy purchases. TVA's natural gas- and oil-fired fleet consists of over 100 combustion turbine power blocks. TVA has contracted for approximately 30 megawatts of nameplate renewable energy capacity from over 10 wind turbine generators located on Buffalo Mountain near Oak Ridge, Tennessee; over 4.8 megawatts of nameplate capacity from a landfill gas facility near Knoxville, Tennessee, and over 4.5 megawatts of nameplate capacity from a solar farm in Haywood County, Tennessee. TVA utilizes both short-term and long-term coal contracts.
The Company's transmission system has approximately 70 interconnections with over 10 neighboring electric systems. TVA-operated generating assets consist of over 40 active coal-fired units and over 20 inactive coal-fired units, approximately six nuclear units, approximately 110 conventional hydroelectric units, approximately four pumped-storage units, over 10 combined-cycle power blocks, approximately 90 simple-cycle units, approximately five diesel generator units, over one wind energy site and over 10 solar sites. TVA's transmission system interconnects with systems of surrounding utilities and consists of assets, including approximately 2,500 circuit miles of approximately 500 kilovolt, over 11,500 circuit miles of approximately 161 kilovolt, and over 2,200 circuit miles of other voltage transmission lines; approximately 510 transmission substations, power switchyards and switching stations, and approximately 1,290 customer connection points (customer, generation and interconnection).
TVA operates and maintains approximately 50 dams and manages natural resource stewardship properties, which include approximately 11,000 miles of reservoir shoreline; approximately 293,000 acres of reservoir land; approximately 650,000 surface acres of reservoir water, and approximately 80 public recreation areas throughout the Tennessee Valley, including campgrounds, day-use areas, and boat launching ramps. The Company has a range of buildings throughout its service area in addition to the buildings located at its generation and transmission facilities, including office buildings, customer service centers, power service centers, warehouses, visitor centers and crew quarters.
