A primary stock screen identified 21 U.S.-listed cup-and-handle candidates. Additional screening identified three recent candidates: M/I Homes, Patterson-UTI Energy and Sony Group. Together, they form a watchlist, not a list of independently verified, buy-ready breakouts.
24 U.S.-listed stocks flagged as cup-and-handle candidates
The primary screen: 21 stocks
The primary screen covers New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq stocks priced above $1, with average daily dollar turnover above $1 million over 21 trading sessions. It identifies patterns detected within the past five price bars. Its scope excludes exchange-traded funds, stocks priced at $1 or less, and some illiquid securities.
The volume column shows the share volume displayed in the Oct. 30 snapshot. Five-day turnover means average daily dollar trading value over five sessions, not average share volume. Market capitalization and business category provide basic fundamental context; they do not establish valuation or earnings quality. Prices and dollar figures are in U.S. dollars.

Volume, technical considerations and fundamental research
The following assessments interpret the reported price changes and liquidity figures. Fundamental research priorities are items to investigate, not verified findings about the companies' latest performance. The screening data do not supply earnings growth, price-to-earnings ratios, debt ratios, moving averages, relative strength index readings, exact cup rims or handle lows.

| Ticker | Trading volume | Technical considerations | Fundamental inputs to investigate |
|---|---|---|---|
| PEP | The list's highest five-day dollar turnover; 19.39 million shares traded alongside a 2.65% gain. | Constructive price action, but an average share-volume comparison is needed to confirm unusual activity. | Organic sales growth, pricing versus unit volumes, operating margins, dividend coverage and debt. |
| INTU | About $888 million in average daily dollar turnover; 3.91 million shares traded as the price rose 2.99%. | Check whether the advance cleared the handle high or remained inside the base. | Recurring revenue, customer retention, operating leverage, stock-based compensation and valuation. |
| WM | About $639 million in average daily dollar turnover; 2.52 million shares traded. | The 1.10% gain alone does not confirm a breakout. Verify resistance and volume expansion. | Pricing versus collection volumes, margins, capital spending, free cash flow and leverage. |
| TJX | About $610 million in average daily dollar turnover; 4.66 million shares traded during a 0.76% decline. | Determine whether the decline represents an orderly handle pullback or a loss of support. | Comparable-store sales, inventory productivity, merchandise margins and valuation. |
| EFX | A 2.90% advance accompanied volume of 1.61 million shares. | Compare volume with its historical average and identify the handle's breakout level. | Revenue mix, mortgage-sensitive activity, operating margins, cash conversion and debt. |
| ONON | Some 8.68 million shares traded as the price rose 2.99%. High absolute volume is not necessarily high relative volume. | Verify whether the move exceeded the handle high with above-normal participation. | Revenue growth, gross margin, inventory relative to sales, distribution mix and valuation. |
| PAYX | About $339 million in average daily dollar turnover; 3.53 million shares traded during a 2.51% gain. | Look for a close above resistance and subsequent follow-through. | Client growth and retention, payroll-related revenue, margins, cash generation and acquisition-related debt. |
| IBN | Volume reached 6.01 million ADRs, with average daily dollar turnover of about $137 million. | Evaluate the U.S.-listed ADR's own resistance, support and volume structure. | Loan and deposit growth, net interest margin, asset quality, credit costs and capital adequacy. |
| SJM | Volume of 1.70 million shares accompanied a 2.88% gain. | Confirm that the advance exceeded the handle high on above-normal volume. | Organic volumes, brand performance, input costs, margins and debt reduction. |
| AXS | Nearly 976,000 shares traded; average daily dollar turnover was about $78 million. | The 1.97% gain warrants chart review but does not independently establish a breakout. | Combined ratio, reserve development, catastrophe exposure, investment income and price-to-book valuation. |
| SHAK | About 955,000 shares traded while the price was nearly unchanged. | Determine whether the handle is tightening rather than assuming a breakout has begun. | Same-store sales, restaurant-level margins, new-location economics and expansion spending. |
| BEKE | Volume reached 4.04 million ADRs during a 1.66% gain; average daily dollar turnover was about $61 million. | Check the ADR's resistance level and whether handle support remains intact. | Transaction activity, revenue mix, profitability, cash holdings and property-market exposure. |
| BLMN | Some 2.21 million shares traded as the price fell 1.12%. | Compare volume with historical levels to distinguish consolidation from selling pressure. | Comparable sales, customer traffic, restaurant margins, debt, leases and turnaround execution. |
| EVER | About 949,000 shares traded during a 3.11% gain. Dollar turnover was below that of the large-cap leaders. | Review bid-ask spreads, relative volume and the precise breakout level. | Revenue growth, customer concentration, acquisition costs, margins and cash conversion. |
| KMTS | Volume totaled 324,774 shares as the price declined 3.01%. | Establish whether the price remains above the handle low before treating the pattern as intact. | Commercial adoption, revenue growth, gross margins, cash runway and potential dilution. |
| MNSO | About 869,000 ADRs traded during a 3.65% gain; average daily dollar turnover was about $11 million. | Compare activity with normal volume and verify that the price cleared resistance. | Same-store sales, store expansion, margins, cash generation and capital allocation. |
| WDS | About 380,000 ADRs traded; average daily dollar turnover was about $9 million. | Use ADR-specific liquidity, rather than company size, to assess execution and breakout participation. | Production, realized commodity prices, project spending, free cash flow and dividend coverage. |
| PTLO | Volume reached 1.79 million shares, but average daily dollar turnover was about $8.65 million. | The 1.81% decline requires a check of handle support; share count alone can overstate apparent liquidity. | Same-store sales, restaurant-level margins, new-store returns, debt and lease commitments. |
| INN | About 897,000 shares traded during a 2.06% decline. | Review support and bid-ask spreads. A screening flag alone does not establish a reversal. | Occupancy, revenue per available room, funds from operations, debt maturities and interest coverage. |
| KRNT | Volume totaled 523,040 shares while the price fell 3.58%. | Determine whether the move remains a shallow handle or represents a deeper breakdown. | Equipment demand, recurring revenue, gross margin, cash burn and cash reserves. |
| RRGB | The screen's lowest average daily dollar turnover, at $2 million; 176,247 shares traded. | Pay particular attention to execution, slippage and handle support after the 2.36% decline. | Customer traffic, comparable sales, margins, liquidity, debt and turnaround progress. |
Three additional recent candidates
These candidates were identified through separate screening methods. Their signals, dates and methodologies are not directly comparable with the primary screen.
MHO: M/I Homes
- Technical considerations: A “large cup and handle” was flagged Oct. 30. The screening output displayed a pre-alert close of $128.34 and an “enter up to” value of $132.24. The latter is a screening strategy parameter, not an independently verified resistance level or an entry recommendation in this article.
- Volume: The screening output displayed 266,940 shares but did not provide a comparable average-volume figure or sufficiently clear session context. That figure alone does not establish institutional accumulation.
- Fundamental inputs: The company's third-quarter release reported revenue down 5%, new contracts down 2%, deliveries down 2% and backlog value down 9% to $1.1 billion. The bullish screening signal therefore coincides with weaker reported operating trends.
PTEN: Patterson-UTI Energy
- Technical considerations: A cup-and-handle signal was recorded Oct. 29. The screening method signals after a breakout above the cup's right-side rim and does not require a prior uptrend or volume confirmation. It is not necessarily equivalent to a conventional William O'Neil-style setup.
- Volume: Oct. 30 data showed about 11.26 million shares traded and a closing price of $13.32, up 4.96%. A consistently measured historical average is still needed to determine whether volume confirmed the move.
- Fundamental inputs: Reported third-quarter revenue was $1.34 billion, and adjusted earnings were 7 cents a share, above the cited estimates of $1.31 billion and 4 cents a share. With earnings reported close to the signal date, investors should distinguish an earnings-driven repricing from a durable technical breakout.
SONY: Sony Group
- Technical considerations: A signal was recorded Oct. 27 under the same post-rim-breakout methodology described for PTEN. The available screening information does not provide enough chart detail to verify the breakout level or handle low independently.
- Volume: The retrieved snapshot showed 7.02 million shares, but it was dated Oct. 23, before the pattern signal. That observation should not be used to claim volume confirmation for the Oct. 27 setup.
- Fundamental inputs: The retrieved information listed Nov. 5 as the next earnings date. That date should be verified before trading. Current valuation and earnings-growth figures were not verified in this review.
Assembly Biosciences, ticker ASMB, was excluded from the current candidate list because its displayed signal was dated Aug. 24, substantially earlier than the late-October signals.
What still needs verification
A conventional cup-and-handle pattern combines a rounded base with a smaller pullback near resistance. A breakout above the handle's high on strong volume completes the setup. Screening methods encode these characteristics differently, which helps explain their differing results.
- Pattern geometry: Inspect the cup's duration and depth, the handle's depth and the precise resistance level. A screening label does not replace those measurements.
- Volume confirmation: Compare breakout-day share volume with a consistently measured historical average. Examine whether volume contracted during the handle. The primary screen reports liquidity, not this confirmation.
- Invalidation: Identify the handle low or another chart-based level that would invalidate the setup before evaluating a potential trade's reward and risk.
- Fundamental confirmation: Check current earnings, revenue, cash flow, leverage, valuation and upcoming events. Apart from the specific observations above, these metrics have not been verified in this review.
The available research supports a dated candidate list with liquidity context. It does not establish an exhaustive market-wide inventory or a ranking of confirmed breakouts. Exact breakout levels, relative volume, moving-average readings, relative strength index readings and complete fundamental scorecards remain unverified.
