HCA Holdings, Inc., incorporated on October 19, 2010, is a holding company. The Company, through its subsidiaries, owns and operates hospitals and related healthcare entities. As of December 31, 2016, the Company operated in two geographically organized groups, including the National and American Groups. As of December 31, 2016, the National Group included 84 hospitals, which were located in Alaska, California, Florida, southern Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, northern Kentucky, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Utah and Virginia. As of December 31, 2016, the American Group included 80 hospitals, which were located in Colorado, northern Georgia, Kansas, southern Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. As of December 31, 2016, the Company operated six hospitals in England.
The Company owns, manages or operates hospitals, freestanding surgery centers, freestanding emergency care facilities, urgent care facilities, walk-in clinics, diagnostic and imaging centers, radiation and oncology therapy centers, rehabilitation and physical therapy centers, physician practices and various other facilities. Its general, acute care hospitals provide a range of services to accommodate medical specialties, such as internal medicine, general surgery, cardiology, oncology, neurosurgery, orthopedics and obstetrics, as well as diagnostic and emergency services. Its outpatient and ancillary healthcare services are provided by its general, acute care hospitals, freestanding surgery centers, freestanding emergency care facilities, urgent care facilities, walk-in clinics, diagnostic centers and rehabilitation facilities. Its psychiatric hospitals provide a range of mental healthcare services through inpatient, partial hospitalization and outpatient settings.
As of December 31, 2016, the Company owned and operated 166 general, acute care hospitals with 43,778 licensed beds. The general, acute care hospitals also provide outpatient services, such as outpatient surgery, laboratory, radiology, respiratory therapy, cardiology and physical therapy. As of December 31, 2016, the Company operated three psychiatric hospitals with 412 licensed beds. Its psychiatric hospitals provide therapeutic programs, including child, adolescent and adult psychiatric care, adolescent and adult alcohol and drug abuse treatment and counseling. The Company operates outpatient healthcare facilities, which include freestanding ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). Its affiliates provide a range of management services to its healthcare facilities, including patient safety programs, ethics and compliance programs, national supply contracts, equipment purchasing and leasing contracts, accounting, financial and clinical systems, governmental reimbursement assistance, construction planning and coordination, information technology systems and solutions, legal counsel, human resources services and internal audit services.
